Flexible Working Extension
Employers are familiar with the right of parents and carers to request flexible working (part-time hours, home working, job-sharing etc.). Such requests must be dealt with in accordance with a strict procedure and can only be denied where the employer can demonstrate certain specified business reasons.
From 30 June 2014 this right is extended to all employees who have worked for their employer for 26 weeks or more. Inevitably, this will give rise to an increase in the number of such requests.
Further changes to the rights of parents and carers are on the horizon from April 2015 with the introduction of the right of mothers, fathers and adopters to share parental leave.
